Good Books

Children need to spend time with books in three ways:

  1. Being read to from books above their level to increase speaking vocabulary.

  2. Reading easy books below level in order to master common words.

  3. Reading books at a comfortable level to gently increase the child's reading skills.

Even proficient readers need to practice reading at all three levels.

-- Leigh Bortins, The Core, pg. 90

Here are links to great book lists, age/grade appropriate for leveled practice:

1000 Classic Books - sorted by grade, links to online-available books

(excerpt from list: The criteria we used to judge inclusion are: Does the book have literary value? Does the book re-emphasize a Biblical worldview or the Judeo-Christian heritage in some way? Does the book teach, through whatever means, what is moral or just or true? Does the book encourage to love and good works? Does the book exemplify warmth, tenderness, courage, humor, and other values and characteristics that we desire our children to be exposed to? Does the book nourish the intellect and fire the imagination? Does the book cross age barriers to be enjoyed by all?)

Below are audio books.  Remember that kids should listen to books that are many grades above them, so as long as you approve the content for your children  these should all be fair game!  Since CC uses so much audio review, and audio books are our friends, I suggest having a fairly decent set of kitchen or school room speakers - the ones on your laptop or tablet probably won't cut it!!

The entire series of Little House on the Prairie is available on YouTube!  These are still just the audio books, so no worries about too much screen time.  Plug in your speakers and watch your children as they are taken into the Big Woods!

Nearly all of the Anne of Green Gables books are available for free online.  For some reason, 2 of the books are unavailable.  If I find them, I'll be sure to put them here!
